Rioja Family Peruvian (washed)

from £7.65

Location - Perlamayo, Huabal, Jaén

Process - washed

Varietal - Pache, Catuai.

Altitude - 1800-1900 masl

The Rioja family runs a 2-hectare coffee farm called El Perlamayo. The harvest runs from June through October each year. After picking, the coffee cherries are rested before being depulped and then soaked in water for 24 hours. The beans are then washed and moved to raised beds for slow sun drying over approximately 20 days. Once the moisture content reaches ideal levels, the parchment coffee is prepared for storage.

The farm is feeling the effects of climate change and they are doing everything they can to mitigate this. They have planted many shade trees to protect from large fluctuations in temperature, regularly distributed organic fertilizers to enrich the soil, and properly irrigated the soil as well as ensuring good drainage. They are able to continue to produce incredible coffee despite many challenges.

The Riojas bring their dried coffee to the Falcon Coffees Peru warehouse in Jaen city. Here the coffee is cupped and assessed for quality, agreeing on a price based on the cup score and profile. Our Supplier Falcon Coffee pays quality premiums, 30% above the local market price as an incentive for farmers to produce specialty-grade microlots.

You can expect from this coffee a sweet apple note with bags of sweetness and a smooth rich body
