Doga Coffee, located in San Lorenzo , is a family farm owned by the Madrigal Vargas family. 20 years ago, Kenneth and Cristian purchased Finca La Pacaya and began cultivating Catuai coffee. These distinctive varietals, have great potential cup quality but they require a very high standard of soil health to avoid problems such as leaf rust or coffee berry disease. To achieve this, Doga coffee farm cultivates a range of produce such as bananas, guavas and a variety of fruit trees which provide food and habitat for wild life as well as shade for the coffee plants. they have managed to scale production from 25 sacks up to 300 sacks without compromising excellent soil health.
They face many challenges with the rising cost of farm inputs as well as the Colón devaluing against the Dollar which puts the whole Costa Rican coffee sector into difficulty.
Natural process coffee differs in its process from a washed process in that they leave the seed in the coffee cherry for the duration of the drying process. This imparts an interesting fruity taste as well as a slight fermented note.
